WELCOME TO SWITZERLAND
Schweiz, Suisse, Svizzera, Svizra. Switzerland is a historically multilingual nation, well known as the «Water castle of Europe» and dominated by the Alps. For being such a small country, it offers a surprising depth of century-old culture and traditions. We will tell you about the different regions with their fascinating history and traditions as well as their charming particularities.
SWISS WRESTLING
The Swiss wrestling called «Schwingen» has become a sport of national importance. The best wrestlers are often considered as «bad guys». Usually they confront each other in wrestling tournaments and every three years one of them is elected as the king of wrestling during the Swiss wrestling and alpine games festival. We will tell you about its fascinating history, rules and particularities.
SWISS YODELING
Yodeling had its origins in the call from mountain to mountain, the communication from Alp to Alp as well as from the Betruf, the so called «prayer call». This is a traditional shepherds’ and herders’ prayer that is spoken and sung during the summer grazing period on many alpine meadows in Central Switzerland. We will tell you about the yodeling back then and until today.
SWISS WATCH VALLEY
Watchmaking, the art of creating the mechanical timepieces we know today, only came into existence in the 14
th century. It reached Switzerland when Huguenot refugees were fleeing religious persecution in neighbouring France. We tell you how a small country perched between lakes and mountains did come to dominate a global market.
SWISS MOUNTAINS
Switzerland has more high peaks than any other country in Europe and many names refer to the appearance of the mountains, including their colour. Some peaks stand out from the rest, be it because of their special shape, height or history. We tell you about some of the most famous Swiss peaks, their myths, true stories as well as legends.
